Volvo B10TL Super Olympian

The Volvo B10TL, popularly known as Volvo Super Olympian (VSO), is the successor model to the popular Olympian and the first low-floor double deck bus model to be introduced in Singapore. The first demonstrator unit SBS9888Y was the showcase for the next-generation double deckers to come, and it entered service in late 1999 (see subpage for details).

Subsequently, SBS Transit followed up with an order of 51 units, of which 50 of them received the Volgren CR222LD bodywork and entered service in 2002. They were powered by the Euro II compliant Volvo D10A285 engine (9,603cc) and most were fitted with 3-speed Voith DIWA 863.3 automatic transmission. A selected few had 4-speed ZF 4HP500 automatic and SBS9888Y received 5-speed ZF 5HP590 automatic transmission. Air-conditioning was supplied by Denso of Japan, and unlike its counterparts in Hong Kong none of the SBS Transit B10TLs had wheelchair ramps installed.

SBS9889U was fitted with an experimental bodywork by PSV International and ComfortDelgro Engineering (CDGE) that was to serve as the basis for Volvo B9TL CDGE's later design. Only SBS9810X and SBS9889U were fitted with Transit Media EDS and SBS9888Y with Mobitec flip-dot (removed in 2005); the rest originally used plastic destination plates as a cost-saving measure.

Unfortunately in 2010, SBS9888Y met its fiery end in a depot fire at Ang Mo Kio. The chassis was written off and no injuries were reported. Advances in technology have since made LED-based signs cheaper, and by 2012 SBS Transit began fitting the remaining B10TLs with EDS supplied by LECIP.
