Scania L94UB

SBS2888T was the other of two low-floor single deck demonstrators, dubbed as the "21st Century Bus", brought in by then-Singapore Bus Services in 1999. Bodied by Volgren, it featured a Scania DSC912 Euro II engine (8,974cc) with ZF4HP590 gearbox and was fitted with Mobitec flip-dot EDS. Air-conditioning was supplied by Sutrak. Many of its innovative features, such as ABS, plug-doors, and electronically controlled suspension, were to eventually become standard with the much later K230UB fleet. Similar to the B10BLE demonstrator, this bus also received the CR221L bodywork from Volgren of Australia.

While no further units were purchased, the L94UB represented the transition between the venerable N113CRB and the modern K230UB models. The bus last operated on Express 518, which ply between Pasir Ris, Bedok and Orchard/Suntec. It is now a training bus, where it is expected to live out the rest of its remaining lifespan.

The small rear flip-dot EDS is located at the top. The positioning of the grilles on the left side is similar to the later K230UBs.

Most of the seats are concentrated on the rear section. More standing space is set aside near the exit door. While low-floor entry, the bus is not wheelchair accessible as no ramp was installed.

There are steps before it leads up to the rear section of the bus. The rear aisle for this generation of low-floor buses is wider for standing passengers.

There are no seats on the front wheel arch. From this view, it has the look and feel of a typical low-floor Volgren bus made in the late 90s.

Handle bars (not original type) are plenty for standing passengers. The vintage "Bus Stopping" and "Doors Closing" signs was the last to be supplied by S-Light (now LECIP) for a single-decker.

The yellow stanchion poles at the centre of this demonstrator have an experimental design. They "split" into three to allow more passengers to hold onto them.

The air-con ducts were of the square type that is adjustable by the passenger and can be closed by flipping a switch. This design is not carried over to future buses.
